Equal masses of H2, O2 and methane have been taken in a container of volume V at temperature 27 °C in identical conditions. The ratio of the volumes of gases H2 : O2 : methane would be
(a) 8 : 16 : 1
(b) 16 : 8 : 1
(c) 16 : 1 : 2
(d) 8 : 1 : 2
Answer - (c) 16 : 1 : 2
Solution -
Lets assume that there are 100g of each
then the no.of moles = i) Hydrogen = H2 = 100/2
ii) Oxygen = O2 = 100/ 32
iii) Methane = CH4 = 100/16
The ratio = 100/2 : 100/32 : 100/16
= 1/1 : 1/16 : 1/8 }→ x 16 (multiply all by 16)
= 16 : 1 : 2
Thus Answer = (c) 16 : 1 : 2
